“The battles that count aren’t the ones for gold medals. The struggles within yourself—the invisible, inevitable battles inside all of us—that’s where it’s at.” – Jesse Owens
Gosh, isn’t that the truth?! Not only can I relate this to running and all the internal struggles (physically & mentally), but to life in general. It makes you think about a room full of people and trying to even fathom the thoughts and struggles they are dealing with that you are completely oblivious to.
I read this interesting article from Runner’s World this morning about upper body strength being just as important in running as strong quads and glutes. Obviously, I knew a strong core is important, but I had no idea upper body strength can help fight fatigue and improve your speed/times. Maybe I need to get huge guns so I can be a faster runner…my speed is considered “Grandma speed”. I don’t care how fast you go…if you think you’re running, you’re a runner. Here’s a bit from the article:
The best distance athletes don’t just have impressive quads and glutes. They have muscular arms and shoulders that help them maintain speed throughout their races. When you run, your arms counterbalance the motion of your legs, resulting in saved energy. The swing of the arms helps propel the body forward so the lower body isn’t doing all the work.
Another great thing about this article is the video showing great exercises for improving upper body strength. If there’s only a description of a certain exercise, you might as well be talking to me in a foreign language. Gotta have pictures folks. Too much type = too much stimulation for my tired brain.
Today was a workout (non-TRX) day. I RAN 4 MILES! Which is huge since I ran 5 miles on Sunday. I’ve been trying to run an easy run on the 3rd day after a “long” run in my rehab. Hopefully I don’t have any achy-ness tonight or tomorrow in my foot. Fingers crossed! This could be a HUGE step in the right direction for the healing process!
For those of you that are working today, HAPPY FRIDAY! We’re unofficially supposed to be able to leave around 2pm with one person staying behind to keep the office/university “officially open” since it’s considered a government entity. That person will probably be me. *sigh* Grateful for Netflix 🙂 Regardless, I’m so pumped to have a “free” 4-day weekend!!! And no, I will not be partaking in the ridiculousness that is Black Friday/Thursday. Stores opening earlier this year is just stupid and shows the inability of our society to simply “be” for one day. So unfortunate.
I will be doing my first session of Bikram Yoga on Friday instead. I’m pretty pumped to sweat my butt off and detox. I did a pros & cons search on Bikram Yoga last night and didn’t find one negative. EEEEE! (<—— excited squeal!)
I hope everyone has a wonderful day of feasting and giving thanks!
